The Market in Madeira
Madeira Archipelago is an outermost region in Portugal with only two inhabited islands (Madeira and Porto Santo), and each one has its own isolated electric power system, i.e., there is no interconnection between them, neither between the mainland and these islands.
All the activities in the electrical sector are fully regulated by a Portuguese public entity called ERSE – Energy Services Regulatory Authority, and both Islands work on a REGULATED MARKET basis.
Currently, the Madeira Archipelago power system has several photovoltaic power plants and wind parks, besides hydro units, and an urban solid waste unit in Madeira Island. The objective is to increase the sustainability of the generation system of both islands and to contribute to their decarbonisation, namely by increasing the share of renewable energy sources, always ensuring the best quality, the most economic and the highest reliability of its power service.
